Whatever your idea of the perfect summer, Red Rock Ponds is the place to start. Whether it's fishing for bass in a tranquil pond or whooshing down a roller coaster at Darien lake; relaxing by the fire under a canopy of hardwoods or exploring the rich history of the Erie Canal; enjoying pancakes with newfound friends or shopping for treasures at Ridge Road Station; splashing at Hamlin Beach or biking the Erie Canal Heritage Trail, Red Rock Ponds can be your destination in itself, or can be just the beginning of your summer adventures.
Our resort was first developed as a quarry in the 19th century for the Red Medina Sandstone that gives us our name. The proximity to the Erie Canal made it ideal to ship building stones to markets around the world. When the market for large building stones dried up, quarry operations were abandoned. The quarry holes filled with water, and the forest reclaimed the land, leaving us with tranquil ponds lined with red sandstone surrounded by mature hardwoods.
For serious anglers, both of our larger ponds are known for good bass fishing, and for the kids, we have a large population of sunfish. All of our pond fishing is catch-and-release, and does not require a license. A short 1-minute walk across the road is all that separates our guests from all that the Erie Canal has to offer, from canoeing from our Canal dock (coming in 2009) to biking down the Heritage Trail along the Canal's shore.
Every summer needs some adventure now and then, and Red Rock Ponds is conveniently located within an hour's drive of beaches, amusement parks, museums, and some great shopping. Go a little farther away and you'll find Niagara Falls, or any of Western New York's many and varied charms.
But we'll certainly understand if, once your see our resort, you just want to stay right here. That's why we have a large recreation hall, a swimming pool (coming in 2009), a well-stocked store, a free pancake breakfast and plenty of peace and quiet to keep you satisfied all summer long. There are paddle boats,
row boats and canoes for your use along with a designated swim area with a sandy beach for you to enjoy.
